“Get the net!!” (Who needs a net??)

We’re seeing some Coho Salmon among the Lake Trout and Small Mouth Bass lately, although with the low pressure we saw on Saturday, fishing was a little slow with Dr. Mike. That day we caught a couple Coho, but couldn’t catch a trout to save my life! (well, maybe we could have given more time). Fished Lac La Belle with an 11 year old and she landed lots of perch, a few Small Mouth Bass and lots of Rock Bass – what fun for a young girl who loves to fish. Among them was a really nice 4.5 lb, 21 inch Small Mouth Bass on a purple 4″ tube.

Today was a little bumpy out there and the forecast was not the best weather, but we managed to fish, mostly with the waves in a straight line and pulled in 10 Lakers, with the largest an 8 ponder on a tangled down-rigger ball. I pulled him on by had, then grabbed the lure to hoist him aboard – nets are for sissies anyway.

By the way, it brings to mind a story – a few years ago, I fished with an acquaintance in Northern Mn on Pickerel Lake, where Northern Pike are in abundance.

My partner, I’ll call him Glen, hooked into a few pike and had his son successfully land them with a net and carefully, after clubbing them over the head, removed the hooks and continued to fish. Meanwhile, I couldn’t get a bite, so after a while they began coaching me, not knowing that I had some experience fising… “just cast it over there, you’re sure to get a bite there.”

A few minutes later, I realized that my cheap “wanna be” dare devil (not the real thing) had absolutely NO ACTION to it. I promptly changed to another lure and hooked a nice 25 inch northern right away. As I brought it near the boat, Glen told his son, “get the net… get the net!” I just said “forget the net” and I brought the sharp-toothed northern close the boat and just grabbed him over the gills, just behind the head. That’s when they realized this wasn’t my first time fishing and after that when they caught more, they just pulled them near me to grab them from the water.
