Jim’s gang after the first day of fishing.

Brian – most appreciation from our entire family of fishers for the fine service and great experience. Max’s 8 pounder was exciting, but so was every smaller fish!  You are a quality guy. Jack ain’t bad, either! Best regards to you and family

fish caught with sand point chartersThank you! We loved our trip – more importantly, the groom loved the trip!

Back in the heat of Texas now, though :(  Missing that cool breeze off the top of Lake Superior.

Bob’s son with a nice Lake Trout. He later caught a small mouth bass in Lac La Belle.

Thanks so much for your time on Friday with my family giving them a great fishing experience.  In my job role I work very closely with our safety department so I was very impressed with your safety orientation and explanation of all the safety features on the boat.

10 fish caught at Stannard Rock, lake superior

Tim and Sharon with their limit of 10 fish for the day from Stannard Rock

Hi Brian! We had such a great time fishing last summer! Tim and I are looking ahead at our schedule and hoping to be able to book another trip with you! Sharon and I had one of the best times we have had for awhile. I shipped 30lbs of lake trout home and though they were frozen everyone had enjoyed some fantastic lake Superior lake trout. We have recommended your service to anyone who has been interested.

Pat and Rob with their catch

Just wanted to let you know I drove back a day early to use my day off to smoke the fish. I used a pickling spice brine overnight, let dry, and smoked at 180 deg. for 7 hours. An old captain in Grand Haven suggested a light brush of maple syrup just before done. The fish was fantastic! I can’t wait to share at work.

fishing picture of dan langford on the boat with sand point chartersWow!  What a way to celebrate my birthday! Couldn’t ask for better weather or a better fishing experience out at Stannard Rock. Not only did I catch the fish of a lifetime with that thirty-pound Laker, but diving off the boat at the lighthouse was the icing on the cake. Your pleasant personality, knowledge of the sport and the surrounding area, and many fish stories all helped to make the trip enjoyable – oh and I don’t want to forget the delicious smoked Lake Trout snack.

“Thanks Brian – for a great day of late September lake trout fishing.  If you ordered the weather it could not have been better. Sunny skies and calm winds made for some comfortable time on the water.  The Fishin’ Mission is a great boat to get out on Superior in and the lake trout were biting pretty good with several over 6 pounds.  Mike was delighted with the catch – for him a first!

If you want an enjoyable fishing trip with a great guy, give Sand Point Charters a call and schedule some time with Captain Brian!  Thanks again from both of us!”

Lessons Learned From the Lure Test Tank

Some have asked, “So what good is your test tank?” in various ways, some with sarcasm in their voice. Besides being fun to build on the off-fishing season, there is a lot to be learned from testing lures. (see this facebook page for a video of the test tank) One was “… does it measure […]

Lure testing tank project

My lure test tank is coming along well. I received the parts from QC Supply.  a very good reputable company, but the elbows were not in stock and had to be made, hence I had to wait a little. I used 12 inch pvc air duct, and it’s not for intended for high pressure application, but […]

Take a kid fishing, it instilled a great memory and hobby in my mind!

I remember when I was a kid only 11 years old I caught my biggest and most memorable Splake Trout of my lifetime. (Here is a description and picts to see what they look like) I did a lot of bumming with my good buddy Porky and his dad who brought us places that were […]

Maximizing lines, Cover the Whole Water Column and a Wide Swath of Water

When trolling for trout and salmon, especially in deeper water and when fishing is slow, it’s a good idea to cover the whole water column in order to maximize your catch rate and find the fish more quickly. In fact it gives you and your partners something to do when things are slow until you […]

Three most important Tips for catching lake trout (lakers)

Here’s a nice laker that Leo caught at Isle Royale last summer with a hand line, jigging the bottom in 130 feet of water. Here is my best advice on maximizing catch rates of lake trout in order of importance: 1. Get your bait where the fish are. You may think this goes without saying, […]

Testing lures for maximizing lake trout catch rates

In the summers, when I am out trolling in Lake Superior with my kids or by myself, I am exploring (fishing) for better and more effective ways to catch fish. Not only do I try new areas, but varying speeds, new lures and different techniques. I’ve spent hours dragging lure after lure by the side […]

Hunting now until ice forms for fishing again.

Grand daughter Kiely, our newest one, only 2 months old. A week or so ago, family spent a night in Green Bay so Margaret could attend a seminar. Took the kids to Lambeau field and also attended a snowmobile trade show. Spent the last few days in the woods, not really hunting as much as […]

Last Day on Lake Superior for the year, Spawning Lake Trout Done!

Wally, Sven, Stanley, Leo and I, spent a very nice day on the Big Lake yesterday (November 7). The water temp was 45 and the air around 50 with plenty of sunshine. We tried to find a new spawning area, but the depth was a little deeper than expected and we found no lakers. We […]

Spawning Lake Trout in Lake Superior, Fall Fishing

Just a quick note about this week while after spawning lake trout. Four of us fished out of Traverse and caught 12 lakers, released one, much to the chagrin of the brother-in-law captain. I guess I won’t get any more invites from him 😉 Hope to go out again before winter sets in, but have […]
