Trolling in the Keweenaw Peninsula

Fishing is still great in the Keweenaw Peninsula out of Lac la Belle with some salmon – both coho and kings – and lots of Lake Trout near Bear Bluff and Manitou Island.

Recently on the Helm-n-Buoys I took out a couple of volunteer firemen (3 time client Mel and 2 time, Ron). We had a nice evening on Lake Superior (Bete Grise), trolling for lake trout about 6 miles out and caught more fish than they wanted.

The next day was IT Consultant, IV and Director of Operations, Melanie.

The day started out too foggy to go out to my spots, so we dragged lines near the drop off in close to no avail before the fog lifted and allowed us to go deep after lake trout. It was a little bumpy on the way out, and the thick fog blanketed us the rest of the morning, but we had a good time visiting and catching fish on Finn Action Lures. The down riggers worked well at the bottom and the “meat pole” also caught fish with a spin and glow trailing behind, also at the bottom. They both went home with more fish than they wanted, so I have some of their extras in the freezer now that I will smoke up soon.

Today, I had a day off, so I got up early and… you guessed it… went fishing before the rain set in this afternoon. I ran an experiment with my copper lines and some other tackle that has been going un-used. I caught some fish, but by results of the experimenting, that tackle will remain in the box for a while again.

Melanie with her “Lucky Hat”. It was slow fishing until she brought it out!
