Testing lures for maximizing lake trout catch rates

In the summers, when I am out trolling in Lake Superior with my kids or by myself, I am exploring (fishing) for better and more effective ways to catch fish. Not only do I try new areas, but varying speeds, new lures and different techniques. I’ve spent hours dragging lure after lure by the side of the boat, observing the action at various speeds. Of course during this time I will also be trolling the entire water column from the surface to the bottom…. in other words, using modern day lingo, I am multitasking (;-)

Now, with 16 inches of snow on the ground, with not much fishing to be done (at least until the ice forms) I have been wondering and thinking about how to test my lures at home. I’ve googled “test tank” and come up with the idea of installing a swimming pool in my basement. I figure for a mere $25,000 I can have a pretty nice tank installed AND it could be a multi-use tank to boot… the kids could swim all winter long!
