“Wow, that’s 3 fish in less than an hour and all different species. Now we need a lake trout and we’ll have four!” I shouted as Jeff landed a 6 lb brown trout. The first fish was a Coho, then a King (Chinook) Salmon. I could hardly believe our luck, especially since we started fishing […]
We're quite a catch!
– 3-time client, MikeThanks for the great charter. Will try to do again next year. Thanks to (deckhand) Doug as well.
– JimBrian – most appreciation from our entire family of fishers for the fine service and great experience. Max’s 8 pounder was exciting, but so was every smaller fish! You are a quality guy. Jack ain’t bad, either! Best regards to you and family
– DaneThank you! We loved our trip – more importantly, the groom loved the trip!
Back in the heat of Texas now, though Missing that cool breeze off the top of Lake Superior.
– BobThanks so much for your time on Friday with my family giving them a great fishing experience. In my job role I work very closely with our safety department so I was very impressed with your safety orientation and explanation of all the safety features on the boat.
– ScottJanice, Kathryn, and I truly enjoyed our fishing experience aboard the “Fishin Mission”. Definitely one of the highlights of our vacation. The salmon were great on the grill that evening.
– TimHi Brian! We had such a great time fishing last summer! Tim and I are looking ahead at our schedule and hoping to be able to book another trip with you! Sharon and I had one of the best times we have had for awhile. I shipped 30lbs of lake trout home and though they were frozen everyone had enjoyed some fantastic lake Superior lake trout. We have recommended your service to anyone who has been interested.
– RobJust wanted to let you know I drove back a day early to use my day off to smoke the fish. I used a pickling spice brine overnight, let dry, and smoked at 180 deg. for 7 hours. An old captain in Grand Haven suggested a light brush of maple syrup just before done. The fish was fantastic! I can’t wait to share at work.
– CindyWe all enjoyed the time we spent out on the water. The fish tasted great and your son and you both were very enjoyable to be with. We will surely see you again next time we are up that way.
– Susan and MartinGreat trip, hope to get back one of these years!
– Dan Langford (and his wife Ann who planned the surprise) - Pinckney, MichiganWow! What a way to celebrate my birthday! Couldn’t ask for better weather or a better fishing experience out at Stannard Rock. Not only did I catch the fish of a lifetime with that thirty-pound Laker, but diving off the boat at the lighthouse was the icing on the cake. Your pleasant personality, knowledge of the sport and the surrounding area, and many fish stories all helped to make the trip enjoyable – oh and I don’t want to forget the delicious smoked Lake Trout snack.

“Thanks Brian – for a great day of late September lake trout fishing. If you ordered the weather it could not have been better. Sunny skies and calm winds made for some comfortable time on the water. The Fishin’ Mission is a great boat to get out on Superior in and the lake trout were biting pretty good with several over 6 pounds. Mike was delighted with the catch – for him a first!
If you want an enjoyable fishing trip with a great guy, give Sand Point Charters a call and schedule some time with Captain Brian! Thanks again from both of us!”

Lake Trout Tagging and How to Identify Planted Fish
Did you know that some of the lake trout we catch are planted and reared in a fishery? The Michigan DNR has been doing lake trout plantings from Copper Harbor and around the Upper and Lower Peninsula for many years. They also plant speckled trout, brown trout, steelhead and salmon. Here is an interesting video by […]
Mystery Fish at Stannard Rock Lighthouse
By the number of posts on my website, you’d think I wasn’t even getting out fishing, but it’s been quite the opposite! I’ve been fishing a lot lately – and catching a pretty good mixed bag of Steelhead, Pink Salmon, Coho Salmon, Lake Trout, Splake and Browns. Monday, which was Independence Day, I started off […]
Lake Trout of Lake Superior Clarified
I’d like to clarify some misinformation about lake trout species that I and others have believed, namely about the number of “species” of Lake Superior lake trout. Tom Rozich, in his DMG Outdoor Page column, August 2014 addresses this question very well and here is his article: An Age Old question and frequent topic of […]
Early Season Fishing
If you are one of the brave and hardy fishermen who would like to fish for trout or salmon (or steelhead) as soon as the ice is out (I mean on the Great Lakes, since there is no closed season on Lake Superior in Michigan), how, or where do you find them? Where are the […]
Fresh Fish! Keep it That Way!
I’ve been asked numerous times, “How do you cook your lake trout?” (or salmon), or “What’s your favorite recipe for coho?” My standard answer is “Just be careful not to overcook your fish. Like chicken, it’s real easy to cook too long and it ends up being too dry”. Then I’ll go on to say […]
Honeybee Lure – Trout, Salmon, Steelhead
Check out this new lure, the Honeybee by Tamiron.com. It’s an aluminum body lure which is very light weight, so it starts to have decent action at a very low speed and still behaves very well at higher speeds over 3 mph – maybe even higher, but I don’t troll much faster than that anyway. […]
Trolling Down Under (Nicaragua)
We arose at 4:30 am on the morning of the fishing outing and paid $5 ($140 Cordoba with a 28 to 1 exchange rate) for 3 cups of instant coffee, which surprised me that in a country where they grow coffee beans, it’s hard to find a good cup of coffee (but that’s another story).
We were to be picked up at 5 am, but waited until 5:40 (Not surprising because Central America has no concept of time – yet another story) before our fishing adventure began.
Dreaming – The American Great Loop
I often ask myself “what if…” and then insert some goal or desire I may have. For example, “what if we sold our printing business?” I’m sure I’d do more charter fishing. (See our printing business here) Recently I received a gift from one of my Keweenaw sightseeing clients. It’s a book titled “Bring Your […]
Driving on the Ice and Fishing AK
“The days are short in December here in Alaska,” my son said as we prepared our ice gear for lake trout fishing for the next day. “We need to leave here by 6 am in order to have a decent day’s fishing before the sun sets.” In Anchorage, the sky starts to get light around […]
