Today is a rainy day in the Keweenaw Peninsula, so here I sit, just dreaming of lake trout fishing, instead of trolling out there on Bete Grise, or Lac La Belle.
The past month has flown by with a trip to ND, a camping trip with the boys at *“Slod’s” and some fishing in between. To sum up the fishing, I was skunked with my grand-kids (in a short-attention-span outing) landed 6 lake trout with retired businessman Mel, brought bat biologist Trevor to Manitou island, hooked 5 Lakers with a group of 5 retirees, brought in another 7 with a Texan family of 4, 6 Lakers and a coho with two locals, 1/2 doz with Accountant Jeff and humorist Kim and finally 2 & 1/2 dozen (code for 8) with a hobby-farm, Wausau family.
We’ve been mixing up FinnAction Lures, (my home-made ones) with greens and some glow and Bay de Noc Lure Company spoons. Dodgers and home-spun spin-n-glows are working pretty good. We’ve been seeing some suspended fish around 80 to 100 feet down, but picking up the lake trout on the bottom in 150 to 200 feet.
We’ll be out again tomorrow in pursuit of some more tasty trout, (and possibly Salmon) then next week at Stannard Rock in after the “BIG” ones.
*“Slod’s” is short for Schlatters Lake, which is at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula and has a island that we have camped on every June for the past 41 years… ever since I was a young fisherman.(boy)
