Bass and Pike Fishing Lac La Belle

We’ve had a lot of wind lately, so it’s been tough to fish the big lake, but I got out a few times lately to wet some lines.
On Saturday we had a graduation party for Julia, so I couldn’t fish until Sunday morning. We had about 8 boys sleeping at the cottage and some expressed interesting in fishing, so I tried to wake them at 5 am, but only one said he’d get up, but soon lost interest when his buddies were too tired to get up.
I fished myself, and since it was too windy on Lake Superior, I stayed in Lac La Belle. Tried several methods… trolling with spoons and spinners, casting crank baits and jerk baits and jigging with tube baits. Fishing was a little on the slow side though, as I caught only one pike, 2 small mouth bass, a rock bass and one crappie. At least the variety was there.
Monday was much the same as far as the boys were concerned, even though I didn’t get up until 5:30… oh, I almost forgot – I called Norm at 10:30 the night before, but his wife must have been influential in his decision not to come fishing.
I trolled around the irons in Bete Gris for an hour or so with no luck, then into Lac La Belle.
The small mouth bass were really active, hitting on dark colored tubes, jigged real slow. The bite was not real aggressive, just feeling like a small nibble sometimes so I had to pay attention to any little resistance. Even so, I got several on a set-line with the same tube bait on a weighted hook. A slow drift, controlled by the GPS anchor (Rhodan electric trolling motor with a gps built in) was the method of fishing.
The water temp is approaching 60 inland now and was about 50 on the bay.
The bass were mostly in the 16 to 19 inch range, with a couple smaller, but all very fun to catch. All were released to grow larger for another day’s fun.
Hope to see you on the water this summer. Get out there and have fun, enjoy the summer while it’s here.

By the way, I plan to add a mounted video camera this summer to show some action shots.
