Dragging Trolling Spoons & Herring Dodgers on Lake Superior for Lake Trout and Coho Salmon

Yesterday in the morning, I set out with prison guard Mark and his wife, daughter and CNA boyfriend without a deckhand as most of mine are still in Menahga,Mn spending some time on the farm with daughter Andrea.

WE trolled around at a few different spots, missing a few lake trout, no fault of the fishermen, but just light hook-sets for some reason. Perhaps the bite was just so light, resulting in less than good hook-setting. Anyway we fished hard while the women slept, changing the speed, lures, colors, switching to non-traditional stuff to no avail. Finally in the 11th hour, or maybe even beyond that, we landed one 3 lb lake trout to show for all our hard work. At some point during our trolling, I asked if anyone had any bananas, and sure enough, Mark had one stowed away for a later snack. I guess I forgot to mention how bad luck comes to those on a boat with ANY bananas! Maybe I’ll have to post a sign “NO BANANAS ON BOARD THIS BOAT PLEASE!” I did not used to be superstitious, but I’ve had a couple incidences like this to make anyone believe these (not so) silly superstitions.

On our evening fish, with 4 guys from mid-Wisconsin, we did not have any bananas aboard. Asphalt paving Foreman Cody and his crew Adam and Cory, along with Boss Tim, had a day off between jobs and wanted to spend it on Lake Superior. Lucky for me, they agreed to leave their adult beverages at the motel and spend a few hours on the Fishin’ Mission. There was a little reluctance, since they thought it’d be hard to have a good time on a dry boat, but they hired me anyway.

The bite was on right away, as we landed a fish with-in just 20 minutes of setting our first line. The lake trout came steady for a while, with a couple doubles and many singles and some misses too. When all the lines were pulled, there were 12 fish, or 3 for each fisherman. Nothing real big, but one 6 pounder.

Cody served as my deckhand with help from all of the other fishermen, as they are used to hard work on the pavement… I’d hire any one of them in a heartbeat if opportunity came! A fun time was had by all, with nobody sick.

Thanks for coming, guys!
