Catching more lake trout in Bete Grise in our favorite places

We got a later start today, casting off at 9 am with 3 good guys from MN that also chartered last summer. I think they are “hooked” on lake trout fishing, since that was what we caught last year and they wanted to go after the same this time. The day was just awesome, flat calm, and the fish were biting. At first, I was using rubber bands (for my releases) that I got from Gander Mountain at a cost of $4.99 for a bag of 60, but after realizing that they were not very consistent, I switched to $.40 for a bag of 100 Walmart bands and they worked much better. The rubber bands, used on a 8 inch canon “pincher-type” release, allows us to see bites from smaller fish, even if they can’t break the rubber band.
The first fish we boated was a 1 lb laker, which we kept live just in case it ended up being our only fish, but judging from previous days, I was sure we would find many more. As it turned out, we had another larger fish on with-in minutes, but it shook the lure almost as soon as it broke the surface of the water. Soon after that we boated a much nicer keeper, so our first one is out there growing larger for another day, or another angler. We got most of the fish on my 2 favorites, a laker-taker and a silver streak (green and gold respectively). A couple came in on a spin and glow pulled behind on a dypsy diver and a couple on a rod with a 1 lb lead weight and an 8inch dodger behind lots of feet of line. Also had a couple of false alarms, or perhaps some ghost fish, attach themselves to the line, then let off at some point to the disappointment of the guys. Actually they were pretty cool about the lost fish and just joked about the “bigger” ones that got away. They HAD to be at least 8 to 10 lbs, I’m sure. ; -)
I paid my dues once again, when I lost a triangle and lead weight set-up along with one of my good laker takers. Oh well, that’s part of the program… ya gotta pay to play… just keep buying more takle. Have to take care of other business in town tomorrow, so no fishing until tomorrow night or Sunday?
