Mixture of Lake Trout, Coho Salmon and Steelhead Yesterday, but Just lakers today

Sunday was spent; with the family and visiting friends at Lac La Belle, but hope as I might, nobody asked me to take them fishing, so Finally, I asked Margaret if she wanted to go for a boat ride out to Bete Grise. She consented and as it turned out, I set a few lines and trolled for 20 minutes or so near the irons and along the shore to the amusement of my wife. She thought all along that it was all in my plans to go fishing under the guise of a simple boat ride.

Sunday night, I checked the weather and it called for a good chance of thunderstorms in the early morning and we were scheduled to cast off with a party of 3… Scott, Janice and Catherll. (Please forgive my spelling if it’s wrong) Since I could not get a hold of them, we set out as scheduled at 6 am, but had to pull lines and seek refuge in Lac la Belle for an hour while a fast moving front moved past us.
When we finally set lines in our preferred spot, it was 8:40 am, but almost immediately, landed a fish. The day was fun and productive with the Philipino girls and Scott since they were so excited about catching such nice “big” fish. (At least they were big by THEIR standards.) Also, I had let them pick the lures so they caught them on THEIR selections. Greens were good, as were glows trolling at 1.8 to 2.0.
Final tally for Monday was 1 Coho Salmon, 1 Steelhead and 8 Lake Trout. I offered to fillet them, but the Philipino could not waste any of the precious fish, including the heads, which are the best part.
This morning’s start was a little later, because my party had to come all the way from Chassell and did not want to get up to middle of the nigh to get here earlier. We set lines in the same area as yesterday, but could not find any fish there after 1 hour of trolling, so we pulled the lines and went out to another spot, where Calvin hooked into a fish as soon as he hit bottom… Bingo! Teacher Brad brought him in, Calvin set the line again and caught another right away for Brad while professor John went below for a break.
The wind made it a little difficult to fish, but not impossible. With an off-shore direction it was not rough, but steering was tough and had a tangle to deal with.
After circling and fishing with downriggers and a meat pole, we ended the morning with what we thought was 7 fish, but we were rewarded with a bonus fish at the very end. Actually caught 9, released one and went home with 8. All lakers today.
P.S. I just got a call from the professor’s wife that they really enjoyed some of the fresh lake trout for dinner tonight. Just wish I could have been there since I had no real supper… just smoked fish and cottage cheese with chips and milk! That fresh fish with potatoes and strawberry shortcake for desert sounded delicious!
Tomorrows trip is sightseeing in Bete Grise to see the lighthouses Mendota, Gull Rock Lighthouse and Manitou Lighthouse with a pass by Bare Bluff, Smith’s Fisheries, Montreal falls, Keystone Bay, the Langham ship-wreck and the coast guard cutter Mesquite.
