Early Trip to Isle Royale

Notice the FinnAction Lure hanging from his mouth.

Ken J. and I along with 2 of my boys spent the weekend at Isle royale and did a little trolling for lake trout and some bobbing. Our trolling was from Middle Island Passage down into Mosky Basin. The larger laker was 11 lbs with LOtS of lamprey marks and the smaller, 4 lb laker was really a fighter, caught in 9 feet of water. It took Andy 11 minutes to land it as it took a few runs and fought like a steelhead or brown trout. In fact, I was very surprised when it came in and was a lake trout.

Bobbling in 150 to 200 feet of water, we all cought a couple of lakers, but the drift was kind of fast even with a few sea anchors out.

Water temps were around 38 with some night ice in the harbor. Still some snow in patches on the island. We had the island to ourselves.

I will post some photos soon since I don’t have them yet… my iphone was on the fritz so I had Ken take some picts.

Got 2 lake trout, oneĀ  on a white FinnAction Lure and one on a J-plug, the rest bobbing on the flats.

Recently Leo and Andy came with me at Traverse and south entry and we caught a few lakers on a green (Fish Grinch) and white FinnAction Lure. I am delivering some of these to Harters today so they will be available for purchase there.

By the way, at the Island it’s illegal to have fillets of fish in your possession except for immediate consumption. Any fish you are taking home should be cleaned only and not filleted.
