Fishing for Lake Trout in Bete Grise

Yesterday I took out 3, a dad Art and his 2 teenage boys on Lake Superior for some lake trout fishing. Stannard Rock was on our minds, and we considered it, but I did not have enough fuel in the tanks to comfortably make the trip. Had Calvin along as the first mate and we fished just a few miles out of the irons in 130 feet and found lakers on the bottom in pretty good numbers. These boys had fished a lot, but never on the big lake, so this was their fist experience catching lake trout. Action was pretty good off and on with a few slower periods. We came home with 16 lake trout, all in the 2 to 4.5 lb range, caught on a variety of spoons and spin and glows behind a herring dodger. As long as we had a lure of some sort near the bottom, they were hitting it. Some smaller ones did not release right away, but were brought up shortly anyway.

Terry and his boys and I went out for a few hours this morning for a little exploratory fishing in new places, and saw many fish on the sonar, but they were not biting… well not many anyway, we landed only 2 after I knocked one off with the net at the boat.  This trip confirmed Terries belief that “fish finders” are nothing more than depth sounders and any “blips” you see are just “…in the program.” Personally, I think it was the banana that we had on board that brought bad luck. No more bananas on my boats!!! Here’s Nate with one of the fish.
